Happy Hacking
PFU worked with Huge-Design to bring their iconic HHKB
(Happy Hacking Keyboard) to a new level.
Project Role: Design Lead / concept refinement
P1 / Concepting
The key feel, layout and sound are central to what makes the HHKB popular, even after 28 years with little minimal updates.
A delicate balance was crucial, balancing the established mechanical character with a future-forward presence.
Many aspects remained, including the key mechanics and ergonomics. What was new, were cursor-control, mouse buttons and configurable touch bars throughout.
P1 / Concepting
CORE was chosen as it felt premium, professional and effortlessly integrated and highlighted the additional features.
P2 / Development
The design intent was established, but many details needed development.
Most importantly the exposed key switches were not a possibility and needed to be hidden. Also the control height needed to be lowered for comfort and ergonomics,
With the addition of the touch bars, added mouse buttons and integrated battery compartment, it proved difficult to balance physical component needs and ergonomics, while still retaining the design details central to the CORE concept.
P2 / Development
Once the core proportions were established, development moved onto the underside.
the battery compartment and switch panel was streamlined and adjustable feet were added to yield specific angle options.
P2 / Development
At the back, a simple multifunction power slider and type-c
port were added for ease when transporting the device.
P2 / charge indicator
at the top, a minimal display bar indicates charge level and bluetooth connectivity status,
P2 / pointer nub
Many textures were explored on the
pointer nub for grip and aesthetics.
P2 / cmf
Black and White color options were kept professional with aluminum base, translucent housing and rubber base.
